Workshop 1 - Jasmin Meerhoff - Live Coded Computational Poetry in P5LIVE

The workshop is an introduction to concepts of computational poetry and how to realize them in a Live Coding environment. By writing search algorithms (with Regular Expressions) we will engage with collage, automation, iteration and randomness in poetry. We will explore how to use P5LIVE both as a writing tool and an environment for performing with text. P5LIVE is a collaborative Live Coding VJ environment for p5.js that runs in a web browser.

This workshop is an introduction to the creation of visuals through livecoding. We’ll be using Punctual, a little-known but powerful and versatile language. Some of the ideas we’ll be exploring (adapted to each participant’s level) are:

• Geometric shapes and images as a pattern’s starting point.
• Oscillators and sequencers to generate movement.
• Coordinate transformations, both built into the language and our own.
• Use of feedback and audio-reactive patterns.
• Fundamental language concepts: coordinates, channels, and combinatorial semantics.
• Language extension through user-defined functions.
